Local COVID-19

This chart shows the number of deaths in Essex hospitals each week, and whether these were due to COVID-19 or other causes.

Changes in the number of hospital deaths from COVID-19 typically lag behind the number of COVID-19 cases in the population by between four and eight weeks. This means that, when the number of COVID-19 cases in Essex increase, we should expect to see an increase in hospital deaths between four to eight weeks later.

This chart shows the number of deaths in Essex care homes each week, and whether these were due to COVID-19 or other causes.

During the first wave of COVID-19 infections in Essex, deaths amongst care home residents lagged behind the number of COVID-19 cases in the population by between four and eight weeks. Therefore when the number of COVID-19 cases in Essex increased, we also saw an increase in the number of care homes deaths a few weeks later. However, it is hoped that additional safety measures put in place across the care home sector during and following the first wave of COVID-19 infections will help to protect care home residents, and reduce COVID-19 related deaths through the second and subsequent wave of infections.
